In short: EMS training is 20 minutes of simple exercises in a suit with electrodes. Gentle impulses make your muscles contract harder than movement alone. A trainer sets the intensity for each muscle group and stays with you the whole time. It is not for everyone — there are contraindications — and the intensity should be increased gradually.
How EMS works
EMS stands for electrical muscle stimulation. Fitness studios use whole-body EMS (WB-EMS): a vest and straps place electrodes over your legs, glutes, back, abs, chest and arms. The device sends low-frequency impulses that make the muscles contract — the same thing that happens when your brain signals a muscle through a nerve. Combined with squats, lunges or TRX rows, the muscles work harder than they would from the exercise alone.
What a session looks like
- Questionnaire — the trainer checks your health and contraindications.
- The suit — electrodes are slightly moistened; no sportswear needed.
- Set-up — intensity is set for each zone; the first session is deliberately gentle.
- 20 minutes of work — simple exercises with constant feedback from the trainer.
- Recovery — at our studio, 10 minutes of lymphatic drainage massage, then a shower.
How often to train
At MyFit EMS Studio clients usually train 3 times a week, with a recovery day between sessions. Intensity is lower in the first sessions and increased gradually, as the international guideline for safe WB-EMS (Kemmler et al., 2023) requires. Drink water and have a light meal 1.5–2 hours before.
Who should not do EMS
Pregnancy; a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device; epilepsy; acute infection or fever; cancer; thrombosis or serious heart and vascular disease; recent surgery. A good studio goes through a full checklist before the first session. If you have a chronic condition, talk to your doctor first.
Safety note. Excessive intensity in early sessions can cause severe muscle damage (rhabdomyolysis), which is documented in the medical literature. That is why sessions should always be supervised and intensity increased gradually.
