EMS Training vs the Gym: Which Should You Choose in Limassol?

A session at MyFit EMS Studio, Germasogeia (Limassol): light dumbbells, the impulse does the rest.

In short: if you are short on time, EMS training is easier to fit into your week. At MyFit EMS Studio (Germasogeia, Limassol, Cyprus) a session is 20 minutes of full-body work in an electrode suit, one-to-one with a trainer, followed by a 10-minute lymphatic drainage massage. The gym gives you more freedom — your own weights, cardio, any exercise — but usually takes an hour or more, plus technique and self-discipline. Neither is “better” on its own: results depend on consistency, nutrition and sleep. Many people combine the two.

How is EMS different from the gym?

In the gym your muscles work against a load: a barbell, a machine, your body weight. In an EMS session a gentle electrical impulse is added to simple exercises (squats, lunges, rows). Electrodes over your legs, glutes, back, abs, chest and arms make the muscles contract harder, so even with light dumbbells the workload is high and the session is short.

EMS vs the gym at a glance

EMS at MyFit EMS Studio Gym
Time per session 20 minutes of work + 10 minutes of massage; about an hour including changing and a shower usually an hour or more, plus travel and changing
Workload whole body at once: back, arms, legs, glutes, abs, chest muscle group by muscle group, depends on the programme
Weights light or none — the impulse provides the load free weights and machines, load increases gradually
Supervision always: a trainer stays with you and sets the intensity for each zone optional: on your own or with a personal trainer
Kit needed none: suit, shower and towels provided yes: clothes, shoes, towel
How you feel afterwards tired muscles; soreness after the first sessions depends on the programme; soreness after new exercises
How often usually 3 times a week with rest days depends on your programme and goals
Cardio no — it is a strength format treadmills, bikes, rowers

When is EMS the better choice?

  • You are short on time. 20 minutes before work or at lunch is easier to keep than an evening at the gym — and consistency is what counts.
  • You want supervision. Every session is personal: the trainer watches your technique and how you feel, and can lower the intensity at any moment.
  • You are coming back after a break. First sessions run at reduced intensity and the load goes up gradually, as the international guideline for safe WB-EMS requires (Kemmler et al., 2023).
  • You don’t enjoy busy gyms. No queues for machines.

When is the gym the better choice?

  • You like training on your own schedule with lots of different exercises.
  • Your goal is strength in specific lifts or competition prep.
  • You need cardio machines.
  • You have a contraindication to EMS: pregnancy, a pacemaker, epilepsy and others (see the full list).

Can you combine EMS and the gym?

Yes. The WHO recommends that adults do 150–300 minutes of moderate aerobic activity a week plus muscle-strengthening activity for all major muscle groups on 2 or more days a week. EMS covers the strength part; walking, swimming, cycling or gym cardio cover the aerobic part.

  1. Don’t do EMS and heavy lifting on the same day.
  2. Leave a recovery day between EMS sessions.
  3. Tell your trainer if you had a hard workout the day before — they will lower the intensity.

What MyFit clients say

Our clients write to us mostly in Russian. One client compared it with the gym: training this way she likes “much more than at the gym”; another, after his first session, said he could not imagine how long he would have to work in a gym to get the same feeling. All reviews (in Russian, with screenshots and full transcripts) are on the client reviews page.

FAQ

Is EMS better than the gym?

They are different tools. EMS is a short, supervised full-body strength session (20 minutes); the gym gives you more freedom with exercises and weights. For busy people EMS is easier to keep up, and consistency matters more than the format.

Can I combine EMS and the gym?

Yes, but EMS counts as a full strength session: don't schedule it on the same day as heavy lifting, and leave a recovery day between sessions. Walking, cardio and stretching combine well with EMS.

How often should I do EMS?

At MyFit EMS Studio clients usually train 3 times a week, with a recovery day between sessions. EMS is not for every day.

Is there a free trial at MyFit EMS Studio?

No. The first session is a full personal session with a questionnaire, suit set-up, workout and massage. Message us on Instagram for availability and prices.
